It’s Thursday morning July 2nd. Much better timing than the previous post, but still a day late. I intended to draft this post after dinner last night, but was physically spent after spending 5 hours outside in the extreme heat. After 20 years living in the summer heat of Kansas and Oklahoma, I am very careful when the weather gets very hot. Yesterday was no different, I’m simply older now.

I’m acting my age; moving slowly, striving to keep my work activities in the shade, taking frequent breaks, and consuming lots of water. The simple fact is I’m 70 years old, and not the man I used to be (iykyk) lol. Went to sleep as soon as my head hit the pillow (typical) and I feel great this morning. Our current really hot weather is making news, and several times yesterday I recalled our last stint in Wichita (2016-2020) with outdoor projects galore. One significant difference – Indiana humidity levels are extreme compared to the central USA.

I am pleased to report – the storage shed is nearly complete. I worked diligently all through the month, with a self-imposed goal of June 30th for project completion. Close, but no cigar and also not a problem. I think the fact I can still haul shingles up a ladder is notable. I’m down to installing siding on the last wall, installing the garage door, and painting the two entry doors. Measuring, cutting, trimming and installing: J-channel, F trim, soffit, and fascia takes the longest time. I enjoy fitting the trim pieces, but it becomes too much of a good thing I suppose, and I want to see siding in place. The final piece of trim was installed yesterday afternoon, so siding on the last wall should go quickly.

In other news: our war with raccoons continues. I looked back through previous posts, but didn’t see any mention of it. Similar to our home in OKC, we were having trouble with raccoons working to destroy our bird feeders while we slept. The problem in OKC included raccoons, possums and skunks. We kept score on a list posted on the refrigerator. If I recall, the final tally was 10 raccoons, 8 skunks and 4 possums. All were caught and released to Stanley Draper Lake. After suffering several damaged bird feeders here, I found our trusty hav-a-heart trap and put it to work. Also similar to OKC, we have a small reservoir (Yellowwood Lake) about 8 miles from our home. Catch and release. The current total is 7 trash pandas caught and rehomed to a beautiful lake.

There is a miniscule update with the crow taming story. I venture into Bloomington a couple times per week. I frequently observe 3 crows in nearly the same location, approximately 2-3 miles from home. I have no idea if these black birds are the same 3 amigos that teased me last winter. The other observation is being awakened VERY early in the morning by a crow cawing for several minutes close to our bedroom window. No idea if they are doing this every morning, but it only wakes me up once or twice per week. I’m not getting out of bed at 6am to entice wild crows for breakfast peanuts.

Happy July 4th !
